Notes from the First Table
The first gathering was an experiment with no hypothesis. Eight people, loosely known to one another, around a borrowed table in Amsterdam. One rule: phones rest at the door. One prompt: what has your attention, really?
The first twenty minutes were ordinary. Polite. Then someone answered honestly, and the room changed temperature. We spoke about work that hollows and work that holds, about friendships that had quietly expired, about the strange grief of a busy life.
Nobody performed. Nobody networked. When we finally looked up, three hours had passed and the candles were low.
We wrote one sentence in the notebook that night, and it has guided every gathering since: some conversations change everything, and you cannot schedule them — you can only set the table.
Some conversations change everything. This was one of ours.
